Drone technology and its cyber risk surface

Drones have moved from novelty to infrastructure faster than the security thinking around them. Survey, inspection, agriculture, logistics and law enforcement all now depend on platforms that combine a flight controller, a ground control station, a radio link, storage and, increasingly, a cloud back end.

Assessed as an IT system rather than as an aircraft, the risk picture becomes familiar very quickly.

Where the exposure sits

The command and control link is the obvious one: unauthenticated or weakly authenticated protocols invite interception and injection, and navigation that trusts an unsigned satellite signal invites spoofing. But the ground control station is often an ordinary laptop or tablet on an ordinary network, and the telemetry and imagery usually end up in a cloud account configured by whoever set it up.

The data is frequently the most sensitive part of the system. Aerial survey footage of a critical facility is a reconnaissance product, and it is often stored with far less care than the operation that produced it.

Treat the fleet as an estate

The practical response is to stop treating drones as equipment and start treating them as endpoints: an inventory, a firmware patching process, hardened ground stations, encrypted links, access control on the imagery store, and a supply chain review of the vendor whose firmware you are trusting.

None of that is exotic. It is the same asset management discipline applied to a category of asset that has historically escaped it.
